This is a broad term that refers to any document in which a person specifies what actions should be taken for their health if they are no longer able to make decisions for themselves because of illness or incapacity. An advance directive can include a variety of instructions about future medical care and can encompass several types of directives, including the living will and durable power of attorney for health care
