Definition

Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) is an acute, potentially life-threatening complication of diabetes mellitus characterized by dangerously high blood glucose levels and acidosis. It results from severe insulin deficiency, which can be caused by missed or inadequate insulin therapy or acute illness. DKA typically requires hospitalization to address complications such as dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and insulin deficiency. Serious treatment-related complications may include cardiac arrhythmias, intestinal necrosis, and cerebral edema with seizures. Recurrent episodes can stem from mood or eating disorders.
