## Definition

The I-140 Successor in Interest Petition is a process in the United States through which a new employer or entity assumes the sponsorship of an employment-based immigrant visa (green card) petition that was previously filed by a predecessor employer. This is relevant when the original petitioner goes out of business or undergoes a merger, acquisition, or other organizational change. The new employer or entity can file a Successor in Interest Petition to continue the green card process for the beneficiary (foreign worker) without starting the process anew, provided certain conditions are met.
