Definition
In the context of criminal law, a citation is a formal notice or document issued by law enforcement officers to an individual, alleging a minor violation or offense, such as a traffic infraction. Rather than arresting the individual, the citation instructs them to appear in court on a specified date to address the violation, or in some cases, to pay a fine or take corrective action. Failure to comply with the terms of a citation can lead to additional penalties or warrants for arrest.
